3 Rockies among Baseball America’s top 100 prospects

Rodgers, McMahon, and Pint crack the list

Three Colorado Rockies prospects are on Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects list for 2018, which was released on Monday.

Brendan Rodgers (22), Ryan McMahon (63), and Riley Pint (99) were included from the Rockies organization.

Rodgers makes his third consecutive appearance on the list, with his highest rating coming at #16 in 2017. Widely considered the most exciting prospect for the Rockies, Rodgers boasted a 1.070 OPS in High-A Lancaster last season and got 164 PAs at Double-A Hartford. The Rockies are high on Rodgers, and he remains a part of the long term plans in the Rockies infield.

Ryan McMahon also makes his third appearance on the list, remerging after being left off in 2017. Unless the Rockies pursue a free agent first baseman before April, McMahon appears to be the front runner for that position, and he could be an integral part of whether the Rockies improve from their team 87 wRC+ in 2017. After an impressive minor league career, the Rockies are primed to give him his chance in 2018.

Riley Pint is on the Top 100 for the second consecutive year and is the furthest from reaching the majors of the Rockies top prospects. Pint spent 2017 at Low-A Asheville and struggled in 93 IP, posting a 5.42 ERA. Pint just turned 20 in November and has an electric fastball that reaches 100 mph. It will be exciting for Rockies fans to follow Pint’s progress in 2018, and if he progresses normally he should reach the top 100 once again in 2019.

The Atlanta Braves dominated this year’s list, with 8 prospects, even after losing a dozen prospects as punishment handed down from MLB after the international free-agent scandal in 2017. The Rockies were tied for 17th for the most prospects on the list.
