Rockies prospect Jeff Hoffman has a strong, brief outing for Isotopes

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Friday, May 11, 2018

After a disastrous outing on Sunday, Rockies prospect Jeff Hoffman bounced back against the Reno Aces on Friday, allowing just one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. He through 86 pitches (53 for strikes) but wasn’t able to make it to the fifth inning. The bullpen pitched the remaining five innings, allowing just four hits and one walk, making it so Jordan Patterson (no. 14 PuRP) hit a three run home run that proved to be all the pitching needed on Friday.

It’s been a—wait for it—rocky 2018 for Jeff Hoffman. The Rockies right hander suffered a shoulder injury in spring training and, instead of competing for a rotation spot, spent most of April rehabbing across the farm system on the disabled list. He’s since been activated from the DL and optioned, had his option “reversed” (which is apparently a thing) and put him back on the DL, before finally being optioned for good to Triple-A Albuquerque. He’s yet to throw more than 90 pitches in a game and, due to inefficiency, has yet to complete the sixth inning in 2018. Much of this can be credited to the injury, but surely it can’t be an ideal situation for Hoffman.

Jeff Hoffman is no longer on a PuRPs list after exceeding his rookie eligibility last season, but he’s still very much on the radar as a prized pitching prospect. Despite some recent struggles, the Rockies rotation seems pretty full without Hoffman, so he’ll have to continue his recovery and hope that a spot opens up for him by the time he’s physically ready.
