Rockies 4, Mariners 3: Trevor Story hits walk-off home run

It’s a sweep heading into the All-Star Break!

It’s a sweep!

The Rockies beat the Mariners 4-3 Sunday afternoon, thanks to a walk-off home run by Trevor Story. This dramatic win capped off a three-game sweep against the Mariners — who, by the way, are a really good team. The Rockies will head into the All-Star Break flying high. They’ve won five consecutive games and 13 of their last 16.

Baseball vs. the elements

There was a steady rain throughout most of the game, and it definitely played a role in the game. Scoring plays in the third and seventh alternately helped the Rockies and Mariners. The rain led Mitch Haniger to bobble one play and fall down during another, and it probably played a role in Gerardo Parra’s weak and off-center throw home in the seventh — a play that any reasonably tossed ball would have cut down Guillermo Heredia. It affected both teams, and they played through. There will be no need to look up mutual days off for these interleague competitors.

Relief help

Scott Oberg came through in a big way for the Rockies. With Adam Ottavino and Wade Davis unavailable, Oberg entered the game with the game tied and runners on in the eighth. He was able to record the final out and keep the Mariners off the board in the ninth. That set up the Rockies nicely in the ninth, as they just needed a single run to win the game and finish off the sweep.

Up next

It’s the All-Star Break! Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story, and Charlie Blackmon will be headed to Washington, D.C. to represent the National League on Tuesday. The Rockies return to play on Friday with a weekend series at Arizona.
