Rockies prospect Jesus Tinoco pitches another gem, Hoffman implodes again

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, August 14, 2018

It was a tale of two prospect pitchers on Tuesday night, as Jeff Hoffman and Jesus Tinoco—both acquired from the Blue Jays in the Troy Tulowitzki trade—started for their respective clubs (Isotopes and Yard Goats) and had very different outings.

Hoffman (who was ranked as high as our #2 prospect by MLB Pipeline and Purple Row in 2017) had another rough outing in Albuquerque, pitching five innings and giving up twelve hits, nine runs, three walks, and striking out two batters. Tinoco, on the other hand, pitched a gem over five innings and only gave up six hits, one run, and a walk while striking out six.

Jesus is bouncing back from tough seasons in 2016 and 2017 that came on the heels of a breakout performance with Asheville in 2015, while Hoffman continues to struggle and find a consistent role with the Rockies. If this trend continues, Tinoco could be the Rockies final hope for becoming a valuable trade piece in return for Tulowitzki.

On an otherwise quiet day offensively for Rockies affiliates, Colton Welker shined yet again and had himself a perfect day at the plate by going 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Lancaster. He continues to climb the organizational ranks and should have a promotion to Hartford waiting for him in the not-too-distant future.
