Thursday Pebble Report: Rockies Dominican League team cannot be stopped

New, comments

These are just teenagers, but holy moly are they winning.

Aided by 10 hits and five strong innings in relief, the Dominican Summer League team DSL Colorado rolled to a 5-3 win yesterday. It is DSL Colorado’s 50th win in summer league play, their 50-19 record has them 11 games up in their DSL Northeast division and is the best record in the entire Academy system through these first 60 games.

DSL Colorado is anchored by Eddy Diaz and Steven Fana on offense. Diaz, an 18 year old shortstop, is hitting .309 on the year leading the team in BA and runs scored. Fana is usually the one driving him in. 42 RBI for Steven on the season, the team lead in that category as well as eight home runs.

Scoring runs is nice, preventing them from happening is even better. Pitchers at this age are often wild, still raw and developing slowly. Juan Toribo has decided to break that mold. Toribo has a 3.14 ERA in 13 starts, striking out a nice, easy 69 batters in his 57 innings of work. The 19-year-old has limited walks and prevented big hits.

DSL Colorado should cruise to a playoff spot, from there they may have some stiffer competition than their own division.
