Rockies prospect Garrett Hampson rakes in return to Triple-A

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Friday, August 24, 2018.

When the Rockies brought Matt Holliday up to the big league club, there was going to be an odd-man out somewhere on the bench. That odd-man turned out to be infielder Garrett Hampson (no. 5 PuRP). He only got 27 plate appearances in the majors but he hit .273/.407/.409 with five walks and five strikeouts while playing second base, third base, and centerfield.

But it was back to Triple-A for Hampson and he certainly gave the Rockies notice for why they called him up in the first place. Leading off and playing shortstop for the Isotopes, Hampson singled in the first, struck out in the third, doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth, and added another double in the eighth. Overall he went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two doubles. He’s now hitting .327/.387/.483 in Triple-A since being promoted from Double-A Hartford on May 17.

The Isotopes (60-70) have ten games left in their schedule. There was never any doubt whether he’d return to the big league club once rosters expand after the minor league season. The only thing in question is how much he’ll be able to force his way into playing time as the Rockies chase their first division title in franchise history.
