The Rockies offense has been struggling mightily (checks calendar) all year, but especially recently. With big-league rosters set to expand today and the Isotopes with just three road games remaining, the big league club may be getting a fresh infusion of offense.
The Triple-A Isotopes hit the jackpot for 14 runs on Friday night in Reno en route to a 14-4 win. ABQ was beating the dealer all night as every position player recorded a hit and Reno native Garrett Hampson (no. 5 PuRP) went 3-for-4 with a double, two walks, and two runs scored.
That wasn’t even the biggest news of the day, as Josh Fuentes was named Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player on Friday. He was also named to the All-PCL team and won PCL Rookie of the Year. He’s the first such player to do all that and win the Triple-A All-Star Game MVP. Fuentes hit .322/.349/.508 on the year while leading the league in hits (171) and games played (131). He also hit 61 extra base hits, including 14 home runs and 12 triples (one shy of the Isotopes single-season record).
Oh, and he happened to improve those totals on Friday, as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored. Probably a pretty good day for Fuentes. We’ll see if he’s rewarded with a September call up for his efforts.
