Noel Cuevas hits for the cycle and then some for the Isotopes

New, comments

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from April 8-14, 2019

The Albuquerque Isotopes had quite the week! As a whole, the Isotopes outscored their competition 61 to 38, including scoring 17 unanswered runs against the Reno Aces on Sunday night. Noel Cuevas certainly helped that cause, as he helped score 24 of those 61 runs. Yard Goats outfielder Vince Fernandez (no. 21 PuRP) homered three times, JetHawks pitcher Tommy Doyle (no. 27 PuRP) has yet to record a run, and Riley Pint (no. 8 PuRP) had two very different outings for the Tourists. The Isotopes look very strong, which is great in the midst of the Rockies’ struggles, but some of the other teams are still finding their footing. Here’s how everyone did after a full week of minor league play.

Top 30 PuRPs

Triple-A: Albuquerque Isotopes (4-3, 7-4 overall)

Noel Cuevas had the most productive week. Specifically on April 10th against the Reno Aces, Cuevas hit for the 8th cycle in Isotopes history and the first one away from Isotopes Park. He went a perfect 5-for-5 that night with two home runs. He also had a great week on the bases, stealing his first two bags of the season. Cuevas recorded 75 games in the major leagues last year, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get called up again soon to help the struggling Rockies team.

Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats (3-4, 4-7 overall)

Outfielder Vince Fernandez (no. 21 PuRP) had quite the week. He recorded seven total hits, six of which went for extra bases. From April 11-13, he recorded home runs in three consecutive games and specifically on April 11, he went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run. So far in 11 games with the Yard Goats, the 2016 tenth round pick has gone 8-for-36 with four doubles and three home runs (.222/.333/.583). In 117 games with Lancaster last year, he went 112-for-423 with 25 doubles, eight triples, and 24 home runs (.265/.370/.532). Thus far, he has been promoted in each year since he’s been drafted and has performed well at each level so hopefully that trend continues.

Colton Welker (no. 3 PuRP): 6 G, 9-for-23, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, 4 K

Tyler Nevin (no. 7 PuRP): 6 G, 4-for-23, 4 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB, 9 K

Vince Fernandez (no. 21 PuRP): 7 G, 7-for-25, 5 R, 3 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K

Bret Boswell (no. 28 PuRP): 7 G, 6-for-24, 4 R, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K

Willie Abreu (HM PuRP): 6 G, 2-for-21, 2B, 2 RBI, 8 K

High-A: Lancaster JetHawks (5-2, 5-6 overall)

Right pitcher Tommy Doyle (no. 27 PuRP) had another spectacular week for the JetHawks. The 2017 second rounder has yet to allow a run in 3 13 innings and has recorded six strikeouts. In Asheville last year, Doyle pitched 58 13 innings and only allowed 15 earned runs on 52 hits for an ERA of 2.31. The year before that in Grand Junction, Doyle pitched 21 innings and allowed 12 earned runs on 29 hits. He has also recorded seven strikeouts in five games while only walking two batters, both this week. This run-less streak won’t continue forever, but one can only hope that Doyle keeps up his performance for as long as possible.

Ryan Vilade (no. 9 PuRP): 7 G, 8-for-26, 4 R, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 5 K, SB

Tommy Doyle (no. 27 PuRP): 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 0.00 ERA (0-1)

Low-A: Asheville Tourists (3-4, 5-6 overall)

Lefty Riley Pint (no. 8 PuRP) had a night-and-day week. On April 9th, he pitched two innings of one hit ball with three strikeouts in the Tourists’ blowout victory over the Charleston RiverDogs. However, on April 13th, he only lasted 23 of an inning against the Hagerstown Suns, where he didn’t record a hit but walked six batters and gave up four earned runs. Pint has been a highly touted prospect since he was drafted in the first round of the 2016 draft, but this is his third go around in Asheville after missing time last year due to a forearm injury that allowed him only eight innings in 2018. Pint still has a fairly high upside, so hopefully the first outing is more indicative of what he can do than the second.

Ryan Rolison (no. 5 PuRP): 3.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1.04 ERA (1-1)

Grant Lavigne (no. 6 PuRP): 7 G, 8-for-25, 3 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 10 K

Riley Pint (no. 8 PuRP): 2 GS, 2.2 IP, 1 H, 4 ER, 7 BB, 4 K, 13.50 ERA (0-1)

Terrin Vavra (no. 13 PuRP): 6 G, 8-for-20, 5 R, 3 2B, 3B, HR, 9 RBI, 4 BB, 6 K, SB

Ryan Feltner (no. 19 PuRP): 1 GS, 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 9.53 ERA (0-1)

Daniel Montano (no. 22 PuRP): 7 G, 7-for-24, 4 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 6 K, SB

Mike Nikorak (HM PuRP): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, BB, 3 K, 14.73 ERA (0-0)
