Jon Gray notched his 20th career win at Coors Field Sunday with an impressive performance, shutting out the Phillies for six innings in a 4-1 Rockies victory.
It took until the third for the Rockies to break through against Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff, and they got their first run thanks to three straight two-out singles from David Dahl, Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story to take a 1-0 lead.
The Rockies expanded their lead in the sixth against Eickhoff when Ian Desmond bought home Story with an RBI single and then scored along with Ryan McMahon on a double from Tony Wolters, expanding the Rockies lead to 4-0.
The only Phillies run came in the ninth when pinch hitter J.T. Realmuto singled to score Andrew Knapp against Rockies closer Wade Davis.
Gray continues hot start
Gray allowed just one hit in his six innings of work, walking four and striking out five. He threw 97 pitches, 62 for strikes, dropping his ERA to 2.78 and his FIP to 4.24 for the season. Gray’s start was the fifth this year in which a Rockies pitcher allowed two or fewer hits in at least six innings, the most such starts for a team in the majors.
Chuck keeps hitting
Also of note was Charlie Blackmon who stayed hot going 3-for-4 with a triple, a pair of singles and a walk. Blackmon has started to turn around his slow start against the Phillies, going 10-for-18 in the four-game series with a pair of home runs and a pair of triples, raising his OPS on the season from .567 to .802.
Looking ahead
The Rockies will look for back-to-back wins when the Washington Nationals come to Coors Field tomorrow. A Rockies starter that is TBD (but is likely to be Tyler Anderson) will take on Jeremy Hellickson in the series opener. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Mountain time.
