Albuquerque Isotopes’ first baseman Brian Mundell (no. 29 PuRP) was activated off of the 7-day Injured List on May 3rd and he’s done nothing but hit since. This week alone he went 12-for-22 (.545) with a homer and two doubles. He has an eight game hitting streak that goes back to May 9th and only two of those were single hit days. Overall, he is 20-for-50 (.400) with two homers and four doubles since coming back. He has also struck out only nine times during that stretch — twice this week and 22 total on the year.
Triple-A: Albuquerque Isotopes, 3-3 (23-21)
Catcher Dom Nuñez (no. 30 PuRP) also continues to hit well for the Isotopes. He added a seventh homer to his growing collection this week, placing him solidly third on the team in home runs. The 2013 sixth rounder is showing some pop, hitting .288/.396/.625 in 24 games in Albuquerque. However, he also has 23 strikeouts in 24 games.
Sam Hilliard had two clutch moments in Sunday’s game against the El Paso Chihuahuas (Triple-A San Diego). In the eight inning, he smacked a 2-run double and was scored by Drew Weeks’ homer in the next at bat. He also made a diving catch to end the 5-4 comeback win for the Isotopes.
Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats, 5-2 (24-19)
Vince Fernandez (no. 21 PuRP) continues his dominance in Hartford, hitting four more homers this week. He hit two on May 16th alone. The 25-year-old outfielder is hitting .291/.393/.615 on the season with 11 doubles, two triples, and 11 homers.
Ben Bowden (no. 17 PuRP) had two more perfect innings for the Yard Goats, in which he struck out three batters and lowered his season ERA to 1.62.
High-A: Lancaster JetHawks, 1-4 (22-20)
In non-Ryan Rolison news, shortstop Ryan Vilade (no. 9 PuRP) launched his first homer of the season on May 15th — a solo shot off of Michael Grove of the Ranch Cucamonga Quakes (High-A Los Angeles Dodgers). He is now hitting .269/.379/.366 on the season.
Low-A: Asheville Tourists, 2-5 (15-27)
Shortstop Terrin Vavra (no. 13 PuRP) started to heat up this week, which began with a 4-for-4, two homer performance on Monday against the Greenville Drive (Low-A Boston). He also went 3-for-5 against the Rome Braves (Low-A Atlanta) on Thursday.
Riley Pint also seems to be returning closer to form. He has not walked a single batter in his last five appearances and has only recorded two hits, but zero runs. He has also struck out four batters. Whatever happened on May 2nd seems to have turned Pint’s season around and hopefully he continues to improve.
