Rockies 2, Giants 0: Jon Gray and the bullpen shut out Giants

A David Dahl home run was all the offense needed on Monday night

Jon Gray and the Rockies bullpen helped get the team back to its winning ways on Monday night by shutting out the Giants 2-0. The win brings the Rockies to 41-37 and into sole possession of the second wild card spot.

[Howling noises]

It would be unfair to say Jon Gray has had a bad season, especially after the roller coaster that was 2018, but there haven’t been many standout performances. But on Monday night by the Bay he assuredly put up one of his best starts of the season, throwing six shutout innings, allowing just four hits, two walks, and striking out six. I’m on record as saying that we shouldn’t treat every Jon Gray start as a referendum on Jon Gray, but if there was one night I might allow it, it would be tonight.

The Rockies also has a mostly quiet night on offense as well, but Jon Gray was able to exit in the sixth with the league because of this opposite field tater from David Dahl, his second such home run in as many games.

This two run home run ended up being all the run-scoring for the night, which the pitching staff made stand up.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night with a 7:45 pm MT first pitch. It’s all but settled that Chi Chi Gonzalez will make the start for the Rockies, while the Giants will send out Madison Bumgarner.
