After a late, weird game last night, the Rockies were able to salvage the series against the Reds and start the second half off with a series win. Things got hairy in the early and middle innings, but Scott Oberg and Wade Davis were able to keep the Reds at bay in the late innings to preserve the 10-9 lead.
Thrice the McMahon
Ryan McMahon recorded three hits today and ended a home run shy of the cycle. The triple that he hit in the fifth inning was his first of the year and his second career triple. Both of his extra base hits scored, with the double scoring two in the first inning and the triple scoring one.
Tony Clutch
Tony Wolters continues to place the ball well, as he recorded two RBI singles. He scored McMahon twice, in the first inning and the fifth inning. Both were during the big hit parade innings. Tony also caught Jose Iglesias stealing in the eighth inning. Don’t dash on the ‘stache!
Two interesting moments
There were some interesting moments in the middle innings. In the third inning, Ian Desmond was called out at first after overrunning the bag to avoid Derek Dietrich, who had been pulled off the bag. The umpire ruled Desmond out on a play that was not reviewable. In the fifth inning, Antonio Senzatela hit Nick Senzel with a pitch and Senzel was not happy. There were some tense “conversations” but luckily nothing more became of the situation other than Senzel did eventually come around to score and give the Reds a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning.
Holy Hampson!
Garrett Hampson also had a really good game, going 2-for-4. However, his coolest play came when he dashed home from second base on a chopper from Antonio Senzatela. Senzatela wasn’t able to record his first hit today, but this was his first RBI.
