The Colorado Rockies lost their third straight game to the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. They have struggled to score runs in the series. Once they finally did score late to tie this game up, that work was undone by a horrible bullpen inning and the Giants went on to win 8-4 in 10 innings.
Wade Davis out here walking people
Sure, there are themes that emerge if you write about a team over the course of a season. But this one is getting ridiculous, because I swear the only thing I have written about the Rockies closer is that he sure is walking a lot of people.
The Rockies overcame a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning and tied this game up. The crowd was excited. Momentum was on their side. Davis started a clean inning in the 10th. And he was awful. Davis walked two to set up the rally, and then the Giants came through when it mattered to run away with this one.
Bryan Shaw entered the game and was no better, but he just let the guys across for whom Davis was responsible. It’s been the same story all year for Colorado’s well-paid closer, he of the 6.04 ERA, and this one was a real gut punch.
Ian Desmond comes through
Before the disappointment there was the excitement that came with Desmond’s two-run homer to tie the game in the ninth off Will Smith. Trevor Story had gone deep earlier in the inning to make it 4-2 and Daniel Murphy had singled to bring the tying run up.
We down by 3 going into the bottom of the 9th...

If we’re looking for a glimmer of hope, maybe it’s that the offense can hope to carry this momentum over into Wednesday after being held quiet by San Francisco for most of the rest of this series.
Peter Lambert pitched well
This was another silver lining. The youngster was solid in his first start of the second half, going six innings and allowing just two runs. It’s a positive sign in general for Lambert and the Rockies, and especially so with how Lambert has struggled at Coors Field so far this season.
Alex Dickerson had a big night for the Giants
The announcers couldn’t say enough about the quality at-bats from the left-handed outfielder, and rightfully so. Dickerson had four hits and drove in a couple runs. That included the go-ahead single off Davis in the 10th inning before things came completely unraveled for the Rockies.
Looking ahead
The Rockies will try to avoid the four-game sweep against the Giants on Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field with Jon Gray on the mound against Shaun Anderson.
