Las Cucarachas, the team formerly known as the Rockies (58-69), head to Missouri to take on the St. Louis Cardinals (67-58). The two teams entered the All-Star break in roughly the same position: the Cardinals were 44-44 while the Rockies were 44-45. Since then the team’s fortunes have gone in opposite directions, with the Cardinals posting a 26-17 record to launch themselves to a dead heat with the Cubs for first in the NL Central. In the same time period, the Rockies have gone 14-29. Life comes at you fast.

Tonight German Márquez takes the mound after his dominant five inning performance last Saturday against the Marlins, a start he left early because of cramps. With the Rockies announcing Kyle Freeland heading to the 10-day IL for a groin strain suffered on Tuesday, Márquez remains the only member of the Opening Day starting rotation not in ABQ or on the IL. Hopefully he can stay cramp free tonight. Márquez’s DRA last year was 3.23, and this year it’s 2.88 (with a 58.8 DRA-), even though his ERA is currently almost a full run higher (3.77 ERA in 2018, 4.71 in 2019). In other words: he good.

Mile Mikolas (7-13, 4.30 ERA, 4.25 DRA) has come down a bit from his stellar 2018 campaign (18-4, 2.83 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 3.38 DRA, in 200 23 IP), but is holding his own for the Red Birds. He gave up five runs on seven hits over five in his last outing, against the Reds. He faced the Rockies twice last year, giving up just two runs (one earned) over seven innings in a walk-off Cardinals win on August 2, and getting tagged for five runs (four earned) over 4 23 innings in Denver on August 24. St Louis still managed to win both games because the Rockies are 96-113 against the Cardinals all-time, including 42-63 in St. Louis.

But hey, this sounds like something Las Cucarockies can handle, am I right?
