The Colorado Rockies were not good in any phase of the game in an 8-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.
Offensively, the Rockies managed just three hits, all of them singles, prior to the ninth inning. Two of the three hits came in the sixth inning from Raimel Tapia and Nolan Arenado, but a pop out by Daniel Murphy and a Ryan McMahon fly out ended the Rockies first scoring threat of the night. The Rockies did manage a rally in the ninth against Cardinals reliever John Gant, but it was too little too late.
Defensively, the Rockies committed a pair of errors, leading to four of the Cardinals’ eight runs being unearned. That did not help a pitching staff that walked five and did not strike a batter out until Jake McGee caught Paul DeJong looking in the eighth inning.
Wes Parsons debuts
Reliever Wes Parsons, claimed earlier this week from the Braves, made his Rockies debut on Friday, entering the game for Peter Lambert in the fifth inning. Parsons had a rough start to his outing, giving up back-to-back singles to the first two batters he faced, including a two-run base hit for Harrison Bader. In the end, he pitched 1 2⁄3 innings of relief, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with no walks or strikeouts.
Looking ahead
The Rockies will look to get back on track in St. Louis tomorrow, with Chi Chi Gonzalez taking the mound against Dakota Hudson. First pitch is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Mountain time.
