The Colorado Rockies used a first-inning rally and another solid pitching performance from Tim Melville to snap a nine-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres.
Charlie Blackmon brought Trevor Story home with an RBI single and scored on a Ryan McMahon ground out, giving the Rockies a 2-0 lead in the first inning. They added another run in the second when Story singled to score Dom Nunez. Starting pitcher Tim Melville and four Rockies relievers made the early 3-0 lead hold up to get their first win in 10 days. Jairo Diaz closed the game out in the ninth, earning his first career save.
Tapia brings the defense
Among Raimel Tapia’s tools, one not discussed often is his arm, but that was on display in the bottom of the first as he turned Manny Machado flyout into a double play, cutting down Greg Garcia at home. It was Tapia’s fifth outfield assist of the season and helped the Rockies maintain the 2-0 lead they jumped out to in the top of the first:

Tim Melville BBQs the Padres
After a rough outing against the Pirates in his last start, Rockies pitcher Tim Melville was back to the form he showed in his first two games. Melville pitched 5 2⁄3 innings against San Diego, allowing two runs on five hits with a career-high eight strikeouts. In fact, prior to 2019, Melville only had three career appearances in which he recorded eight outs of any kind. Even being roughed up by the Pirates last weekend, Melville has a 3.66 ERA in 19 2⁄3 innings for the Rockies this season.
Looking ahead
The Rockies will look for back-to-back wins for the first time since August 14-18 when they take on the Padres in the second game of the series on Saturday. Jeff Hoffman will take the mound for the Rockies against Joey Lucchesi. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Mountain time.
