This piece contains spoilers about the SimRockies’ Friday night game.
It’s time for the SimRockies to change their closer.
If Purple Row’s sim has been accurate about anything, it’s the volatility of Wade Davis’s pitching. After giving up a 374-foot home run to the Padres’ Francisco Mejia that took the Rockies to extra innings and, ultimately a 5-4 victory, Davis imploded again on Friday against the D-Backs. Jeff Hoffman, Jake McGee, Carlos Estévez, and Scott Oberg all did their jobs, leaving Davis with a comfortable three-run lead. Alas, it was not enough. Jairo Díaz came in to mop up the mess, but the Rockies still ended up losing on a walk-off by Eduardo Escobar.
The SimRockies can’t afford to let Wade Davis figure it out, given that they now have a 6-7 record.
The question becomes then, who should be the SimRockies closer?
Here are the numbers.
Potential Rockies Closers
Pitcher | IP | ERA | WHIP | K/9 | BB/9 | HR/9 | FIP |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Pitcher | IP | ERA | WHIP | K/9 | BB/9 | HR/9 | FIP |
Davis | 5.1 | 11.81 | 2.25 | 8.44 | 1.69 | 1.69 | 4.31 |
Oberg | 5.0 | 0.00 | 0.80 | 12.60 | 5.40 | 0.00 | 2.00 |
Kinley | 8.2 | 2.08 | 0.69 | 13.50 | 0.00 | 1.04 | 1.62 |
Díaz | 5.0 | 1.80 | 1.40 | 7.20 | 3.60 | 0.00 | 2.60 |
Tyler “Must See” Kinley has had a very strong season and become one of Bud Black’s go-to pitchers, even though he didn’t pitch last night. But I would argue that the SimRockies are best served with Scott Oberg as closer while Jairo Díaz and Kinley share setup-man duties.
