Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 4: The Rockies were ahead on Friday night! Until they weren’t...

Wade Davis blew it big time in this one

After a blowout loss to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, the Rockies were hoping to bounce back on Friday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Snakes were sitting on a 5-9 record and in the bottom of the division after getting swept in a four game series in San Francisco. The Rockies steadily tacked on a single run here and a run there and entered the ninth with a pretty comfortable 4-1 lead. Unfortunately, that didn’t prove to be enough.

What in the world just happened?

Wade Davis entered the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead, which is usually pretty good for most pitchers, especially against a lineup made up of mostly backup players. Kole Calhoun started off the inning with a leadoff double. OK, fine. That is, until Ildemaro Vargas knocked him in with a double of his own to make it 4-2. David Peralta had the day off, but went 1-for-1 in his pinch hit appearance. Tim Locastro, a.k.a. the Human Hit By Pitch, wore one to load the bases for Josh Rojas. Rojas ended up knocking in Vargas to make it 4-3. Davis was finally removed from the game in favor of Jairo Díaz.

Díaz came in and gave up a sacrifice fly to Starling Marté to tie the game. But it was Eduardo Escobar who ultimately played hero for the snakes, hitting a walk-off long ball over the head of Sam Hilliard to clinch the game 5-4. What a game.

Some positive notes

Before the epic collapse of a ninth inning, there were some positive notes. Ryan McMahon accounted for the Rockies’ first two runs in the first half of the game, hitting a sac fly in the third to put the Rox on top and then hitting a 393-foot jack in the sixth to double the lead — his fourth of the year. Nolan Arenado also continued his ten game hitting streak with a double in the ninth.
