There aren’t too many better baseball feelings than a walk-off win like the Rockies enjoyed for the first time in 2020 Saturday night, and they’ll try to keep the momentum going today in the third game of an increasingly important four-game series against the second-place San Diego Padres (20-15).
Speaking of momentum, Colorado (17-16) sends rookie Ryan Castellani (1-1, 3.54 ERA) — riding the high from his first Major League win last Monday — to the mound. Castellani threw six strong innings against the Diamondbacks, allowing two earned runs on three hits to pick up the W. The right-hander has thrown well in three of his four starts to begin his big league career (the only blemish came against Houston on August 19, when he gave up five earned runs in 5 2⁄3 innings).
Chris Paddack (2-3, 5.15 ERA) takes the hill for San Diego. The right-hander has had an up-and-down season thus far. He’s coming off a loss in which he gave up six earned runs against the Mariners on Tuesday, the second time this season he’s given up six runs in a game. To have success today, the Rockies will need to be disciplined at the plate. Paddack, who employs a mid-90s fastball, enters the game among the best in the National League with a 4.857 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
With wins today and Monday against the Padres, the Rockies would find themselves alone in second place in the National League West (based on percentage points). Colorado is 3-2 against San Diego so far this season.
