Sitting atop the National League West with a one-game lead over the Dodgers and Padres, the Rockies return to action tonight in the second matchup of a four-game series against the Giants at Coors Field. Germán Márquez (1-1) will be making his 2020 home debut on the mound. He has been impressive in two starts on the road to begin the season, posting a 1.54 ERA with a 0.859 WHIP. He’s recorded 14 strikeouts and four walks in 11 2⁄3 innings of work. Márquez went 5 2⁄3 innings (94 pitches) in a 1-0 loss to the Rangers on July 24, before getting his first win after throwing six innings (95 pitches) in a 5-1 win over Oakland on July 29. He gave up one earned run in each appearance.
Kevin Gausman, a Centennial, Colo. native who played high school ball for Grandview, will be making the start in his first appearance at Coors Field for the Giants (5-6). After growing up in Colorado, he went onto be an All-American for Louisiana State University before being signed fourth overall by Baltimore in the 2012 draft. He’s pitched with the Orioles, Braves, and Reds before signing a one-year deal with the Giants in the offseason. Gausman has pitched 8 1⁄3 innings this season in two appearances, including one start, posting a 5.40 ERA with 10 strikeouts, two walks, and a 1.560 WHIP. He came out of the bullpen to pitch four innings in the Giants 9-1 loss on July 24 (two earned runs). Gausman made the start on July 30 against the Padres, pitching 4 1⁄3 innings and giving up three earned runs in a 12-7 loss.
