Colorado Rockies game thread no. 15: Germán Márquez vs. Justus Sheffield

Rockies seek sweep in Seattle

The Colorado Rockies will look to complete the sweep as they take their MLB-best 11-3 record into this afternoon’s tilt with the Seattle Mariners. The Rockies also boast a league-leading 6-1 road record, and they have ace Germán Márquez (2-1) on the hill — so sit back, kick up your feet and revel in this rare August optimism that surrounds the Colorado ball club.

Seattle’s Justus Sheffield (0-2) will attempt to deflate the growing enthusiasm, but the left-hander is still looking for his first career win. Sheffield enters with a 9.39 ERA and hasn’t made it out of the fourth inning in either of his two starts this season. He won’t have to deal with Colorado’s Nolan Arenado, who gets a day off from the starting lineup. Arenado has gone hitless over the last three games and is batting just .185 this season. Chris Owings gets the start at third base in his place.

Márquez — whose only defeat came in a 1-0 loss to Texas in the season opener — will look to continue his dominance against a struggling Mariners lineup that has mustered just five runs over their previous three games. Márquez’s 1.89 ERA ranks seventh among starting pitchers in the National League entering today’s action.

Hello, everyone! I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself since I’m new to the Purple Row team. My name is Justin Williams, and I’ve lived in Colorado my entire life — and had a passion for sports for about the same time period.

I’ve followed the Colorado Rockies since their inception and even got to cover them in the 2007 World Series for the newspaper I was writing for at the time. Anyway, I’m excited to get to know everyone around here and can’t wait to see what the Rockies have in store for what’s left of this Bizarro World of a season!
