After avoiding a sweep by the Dodgers on Sunday, the Rockies are in must win mode for the final week of the 2020 season. Colorado trails the Giants, Brewers and Reds by three games for the final playoff spot. With the Brewers and Reds starting a three-game series tonight, the Rockies would need a sweep of the Giants to give themselves a small chance heading into the final series in Arizona. They’ll also have to do it without their star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who went on the Injured List earlier today.
Germán Márquez (2-6, 4.33 ERA) takes the mound for the Rockies, making his 12th start of the year. Márquez has been pitching well in his three starts this month, holding a September ERA of 3.05. The last time he faced the Giants was on August 4th where he only gave up two runs in 7 ⅓ innings — his longest outing of the season — leading to a 5-2 Rockies win.
For the Giants, it’ll be veteran right-hander Johnny Cueto (2-1, 4.78 ERA). Cueto has been inconsistent this season, but doesn’t give up a lot of home runs (7). If the Rockies want to knock Cueto around, they’ll have to do it by stringing together hits — something they have at times struggled with.
