Colorado Rockies game No. 42 thread: Chi Chi González vs. Mike Clevinger

González enters the rotation to fill in for Gray

After falling victim to a walk-off loss on Monday night, the Rockies (20-21) will hope to bounce back in game two of the three-game series against the Padres (26-17) on Tuesday night. It’s a good thing the game will be at Petco Park with a game-time projected temperature of 74 degrees, as opposed to Coors Field where it’s supposed to be 34 degrees and snowing.

On the mound for the Rockies will be Chi Chi González, who hasn’t pitched very much this season, only throwing nine innings over three appearances including one start. A big part of that is a 22-day stint on the IL because of right bicep tendonitis. With Jon Gray now on the IL with shoulder inflammation, the Rockies need González to step up in a big way in the rotation.

The Rockies have won two of three games when González pitched in 2020, including his lone start on Aug. 3 vs. the Giants when we went three innings. The lone loss came on Aug. 30 in a 13-2 loss the Padres, but González was solid, pitching the third through sixth innings, only giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts. In his last outing, a 9-6 win over the Giants on Sept. 2, he gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in two innings.

New Padre Mike Clevinger (2-3, 3.14) will be on the mound for San Diego, making his debut at Petco Park after being dealt from Cleveland to the Padres at the trade deadline. In the righty’s first start for San Diego, he gave up two runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts in seven innings in a 2-0 loss to the Dodgers.
