Rockies announce additional spring roster changes

Castellani, Mujica, and Lawrence will begin the season in Albuquerque

In preparation for the 2021 season, the Colorado Rockies today announced additional roster changes.

The following players were optioned to Tripe-A Albuquerque:

The decision to send Castellani to Albuquerque indicates that the Rockies are closer to settling on a starting rotation. Given Castellani’s struggles in 2020 (5.82 ERA) and his continuing control issues in spring training (31.50 ERA), it makes sense the Rockies would want him to spend additional time in Triple-A.

Mujica has also struggled in spring training, earning an ERA of 13.50 in two games.

Lawrence has had a stronger spring training, but given that he is coming of a year-long suspension, it makes sense the Rockies want him to throw more in Albuquerque.

Aybar, a converted outfielder, came to the Rockies last summer through a trade with the Red Sox.

Bret Boswell (No. 24 PuRP) had eight appearances in spring training and struck out five times.

In addition, the Rockies assigned the following non-roster invitees to Minor League Camp. Those players include Joe Harvey (RHP), Jesus Tinoco (RHP), and No. 32 PuRP Willie MacIver (C).

The Rockies now have 47 players on the spring training roster.

Given that the season starts on April 1, look for the Rockies to be making additional roster decisions in the coming days.
