In Game 2 of this traditional (if you can call two seven-inning games traditional) doubleheader, Colorado Rockies ace Germán Márquez takes the mound against former San Diego Padres starter Joey Lucchesi. The Rockies will be looking to split after a late loss on a blown save in Game 1 against the New York Mets.
Márquez is making his fourth start of the season and will be looking to pick up his first win. He is coming off an outing that saw him struggle with command early but right the ship as the game moved along. So far on the season, Márquez has an ERA of 4.04 and an ERA+ of 118 and his primary Achilles heel thus far, as with most of the pitching staff, has been walks. In his first three starts, Márquez has issued eleven free passes and will look to cut down on that tonight.
Lucchesi is making his first start of the season for the New York Mets after appearing in one relief outing earlier in the season. The left-handed hurler completed two scoreless innings in his debut for the Mets against the Phillies and has not appeared in the 10 days since. In nine games started against the Rockies, Lucchesi is 2-3 with an ERA of 4.34.
The Rockies offense will look to get going following a tough road trip that resulted in two sweeps at the hands of the Giants and Dodgers and a predictably rough outing in Game 1 today against Jacob deGrom. Nine straight strikeouts by deGrom were followed by a fifth inning in which the Rockies pushed three runs across on two hits. The offense will look to capitalize on any momentum built in Game 1.
