The Rockies are looking for redemption after a 12-0 walloping on Monday night and they are looking to Chi Chi González to deliver it. After being non-tendered in December and then re-signed to a minor league deal, González (1-0) has turned into a valuable fifth starter while Kyle Freeland recovers from a shoulder strain.
Even though González has only had two starts as the Rockies (8-14) are going with a four-man rotation when off days allow, the 29-year-old righty has filled in nicely in only allowing two runs in 10 innings (two five-inning performances). He’s given up 10 hits and four walks, but with a 1.80 ERA, González has shown he can keep the Rockies in games. On Tuesday night, he’ll be pitching on 10 days rest.
Another solid performance won’t come easy as the Rockies have struggled on the road, going 0-7 against the Dodgers and Giants. The Giants (15-8) are off to a hot start in 2021, including a 9-2 record at Oracle Park. Aaron Sanchez (1-1) will be on the mound for San Francisco. Coming off a 2020 when he didn’t pitch at all while recovering from shoulder surgery, Sanchez has a 1.83 ERA with four walks and 14 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings over four starts this season.
