Forging ahead with a four-man rotation made possible by Monday’s day off, the Rockies will hope that Germán Márquez can put his first start behind him and return to the form we all know all love in tonight’s game against the Diamondbacks. This game will be the first of a three-game series that will conclude Colorado’s opening homestand.
After four gorgeous spring days in Colorado against the Dodgers, the weather isn’t going to be as nice on Tuesday night with rain, wind, and temperatures dropping into the 40s in the forecast. First pitch is now scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
In Thursday’s season opener against the Dodgers, Márquez needed 92 pitches to get through four innings. Only 51 of those pitches were strikes and Márquez uncharacteristically recorded six walks, only struck out two hitters, and gave up six hits, which shockingly only led to one run despite having nine baserunners. While Márquez got help from two double plays, his lack of command with his fastball was concerning. Locating his pitches could help him get back to a quality start that the Rockies need right now to break a three-game losing streak.
Luke Weaver will be making his 2021 debut on the mound for Arizona. Weaver, a righty who is in his third year with the D-Backs, struggled in 2020, going 1-9 with a 6.58 ERA in 52 innings with a 1.558 WHIP. He’ll be facing a Rockies lineup with five left-handed hitters, including center fielder Sam Hilliard, who will be making his first start of the season. Raimel Tapia will also return to the starting lineup after suffering whiplash after trying to catch a homer by Zach McKinstry, in Saturday’s game against the Dodgers. Josh Fuentes will miss his second straight game after being scratched from Sunday’s lineup with a sore wrist.
