Colorado Rockies game no. 36 thread: Yu Darvish vs. Jon Gray

The Rockies look to end a 4-game skid in the first of a doubleheader against San Diego

After being outplayed Tuesday night, the Rockies have a busy day of baseball ahead of them. Because of Monday’s weather, the Rockies and Padres then agreed to play a doubleheader today. This will be the third doubleheader of the young season, all because of weather concerns in Denver. Colorado is 2-2 in seven inning doubleheaders.

Notably, the Padres will be at a significant disadvantage because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the team. Five of their players–Fernando Tatis Jr., Wil Myers, Jurickson Profar, Jorge Mateo and Eric Hosmer–will all be out due to either positive tests or contact tracing. Myers and Hosmer both started yesterday’s game but were pulled in the third and seventh inning respectively.

In the first game, it’ll be Yu Darvish (3-1, 2.27 ERA) facing off against the Rockies. Darvish has probably been the Padres best pitcher this season with an impressive WHIP of 0.939. He’s gone at least six innings and given up only one run in each of his last five starts. In his last start, he struck out a season high 12 batters. This’ll only be his sixth career start against Colorado, two of them being in Denver. Through those two career starts at Coors Field, Darvish has given up at least four runs in each.

Trying to turn things around for the Rockies will be Jon Gray (4-2, 3.12 ERA). Gray has also been the Rockies best starter and has been pitching his best at Coors Field with a 2.08 ERA in five home starts. Today’s matchup only appears more optimistic for the Rockies when you look at Gray’s career numbers against the Padres, a 2.98 ERA through 121 innings of work.

Justin Lawrence will serve as the team’s 27th man on the active roster.
