The Rockies clawed their way back in Game 1, but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell to the Padres 5-3. They have yet to win Game 1 of a doubleheader in 2021. The nightcap will feature a battle of southpaws.
2018 Cy Young winner and new Padre Blake Snell (1-0, 4.15 ERA) will make only his second start at Coors Field and first since joining the Friars. The last time he was here (July 19, 2016), he pitched six innings of one-hit, no-run baseball. He walked three Rockies and struck out nine. The Rays went on to win that game 10-1. In his last start in 2021, he allowed four runs on just one hit and walked six Giants over 4 2⁄3 innings. He walked more batters (6) than he struck out (5).
Going up against Snell-zilla will be Austin Gomber (2-4, 6.35 ERA). In his last start against his former club, Gomber lasted five innings and allowed five runs on six hits (including two home runs). He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter. In fact, in his two May starts so far, he has only walked one batter — Asdrúbal Cabrera in the Rockies 14-6 rout of the D-Backs on May 1. Hopefully Gomber will be able to tame the Padres lineup that will be missing Wil Myers, Fernando Tatís Jr., Eric Hosmer, Jorge Mateo, and Jurickson Profar.
