Rockies prospect Ezequiel Tovar is in the middle of a six-game hit streak

Prospect news and statistics from the Rockies minor league affiliates from May 10-16, 2021

While the Albuquerque Isotopes and Spokane Indians continue to struggle, the Hartford Yard Goats put together a three-game win streak to end the week and the Fresno Grizzlies continue to perform mightily — stringing together a six-game sweep of the Visalia Rawhide (AZ).

Top 30 PuRPs

Triple-A: Albuquerque Isotopes (0-6, 1-9 overall)

The Triple-A roster is very PuRP-thin, but Ryan Vilade (No. 3 PuRP) made the most of his week, going 5-for-18 with a double in five games. In his last game, he went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, his second in two attempts.

Antonio Santos (No. 21 PuRP) made one start and was tagged for three runs on seven hits over 4 23 innings. Two of those runs came courtesy of a home run hit by Astros’ outfield prospect Jake Meyers in the fifth inning. Santos was recalled by the Rockies on May 15 and pitched 1 23 innings against the Reds.

José Mujica (No. 29 PuRP) made his 2021 debut on May 10. He had a weird outing, pitching 2 23 innings and allowing five runs on six hits (including a two-run homer to Astros’ outfield prospect Jose Siri in the third). He also struck out five Skeeters during that time, and walked just one.

In non-PuRP news, LHP Kyle Freeland made his first start of 2021 for the ‘Topes. He pitched four innings and allowed just one run on two hits. Infielder Brendan Rodgers also began gameplay this week, appearing in three games. He went 3-for-7 with a strikeout and an RBI.

Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats (4-2, 5-7 overall)

The Double-A roster is also very PuRP-thin, and Jameson Hannah (No. 19 PuRP) has seen limited action early in the season. He was placed on the 10-day IL on May 9 and was activated on May 16, so he appeared in just one game again this week. In his single appearance, he went 1-for-3 with a strikeout.

Ryan Rolison (No. 1 PuRP) made another appearance, pitching 5 23 innings and allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out five Sea Dogs, bringing his season total up to 20 in just three starts. He has also only given up two walks.

Tommy Doyle (No. 20 PuRP) continues to show well in Hartford. The righty made three appearances and allowed his first run in his most recent appearance — a solo shot to catcher Ronaldo Hernández (Red Sox No. 11 prospect, MLB.com) in the ninth inning. Luckily the Yard Goats were up 5-2 heading into the ninth, so the solo shot still allowed them to win their third straight contest.

High-A: Spokane Indians (1-5, 2-10 overall)

The Spokane Indians lost in 11 innings on Sunday night and their record isn’t fantastic, but they have a lot of PuRPs who are doing some good things.

Brenton Doyle (No. 12 PuRP) turned 23 on Friday and just after the clock struck midnight in his hometown of Warrenton, VA on Thursday night, he launched his first home run of 2021. Overall, Doyle went 9-for-24 (.375) with a home run, a triple, and two stolen bases (in three tries). He has reached base in six of his last seven games.

Fast Eddy Diaz (No. 14 PuRP) kept showing off his speed this week, stealing three more bases to add to his team-leading seven. He was also caught three times, but you win some and you lose some. Diaz also has a five-game hit streak, including a triple in Sunday’s contest — his first extra-base hit of 2021. He also struck out three times in that game, though.

Ryan Feltner (No. 25 PuRP) continued his strong early showing, throwing 4 13 scoreless innings on Thursday. So far, the righty has only allowed one run on seven hits through 8 13 innings. He’s also struck out nine batters, but has walked six.

Finally, Riley Pint (No. 30 PuRP) also continued his strong early showing. Pint made just one appearance this week, but pitched 1 23 scoreless innings. He allowed his first hit and struck out two, but also walked two. So far in 2021, the big righty has thrown 3 23 innings, allowed zero runs and just one hit, walked five, and struck out six. He has also hit one batter so far. Could 2021 be the year that Riley Pint finally figures himself out?

Low-A: Fresno Grizzlies (6-0, 9-3 overall)

The Fresno Grizzlies are stacked with talent and they are flexing their prospect muscles, completing a six-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Single-A Visalia Rawhide.

Zac Veen (No. 2 PuRP) is currently in the middle of a three-game hit streak and has four doubles in the early goings. Three of his five hits were all doubles, and they all came in his last three games. He also only struck out twice and walked five times.

Drew Romo (No. 8 PuRP) made four appearances this week, and had a 3-for-3 night on May 11 that included his second double of the year. He also recorded his first hitless game of 2021 on May 12, where he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Grant Lavigne (No. 9 PuRP) has reached base in his last eight games and Daniel Montano (HM PuRP) has reached in his last five games (including a current four-game hit streak).

Ezequiel Tovar (No. 28 PuRP) is currently in the middle of a six-game hitting streak. Tovar has only gone hitless twice in 11 games. The shortstop also hit his first two home runs this week and only recorded one strikeout and one walk (both on May 13).

On the pitching side, Will Ethridge (No. 23 PuRP) has yet to allow a walk in his two starts (9.0 IP) and has also struck out eight batters. However, he has allowed three runs on eight hits.

On the other hand, Mitchell Kilkenny (No. 27 PuRP) has yet to allow a run in his two starts (10.0 IP) and has only allowed five hits. He has walked two batters (one per game), but struck out 14 (seven per game).
