Colorado Rockies game no. 42 thread: Jon Gray vs. Yu Darvish

The Rockies fly to sunny San Diego for a quick three-game set against the Friars

After a weird home stand that featured a postponed Monday game, loss on Tuesday, doubleheader split on Wednesday, three wins in a row (starting with Game 2 of said doubleheader), and then back-to-back devastating bullpen meltdowns...the Rockies head to sunny southern California for a three-game set against the Padres, whom they played just a week ago. The Rockies are 2-14 on the road so far this season, and have been outscored 95-50 in those 16 contests.

Jon Gray (4-3, 2.93 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Rox. In his last outing, Gray pitched Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Padres last Wednesday. He pitched 5 23 innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked three and struck out six. Unfortunately, in his last inning of work he loaded the bases by way of a walk, an error that should’ve been an inning-ending double play, and a walk. That gave way to a grand slam by Victor Carantini three pitches later after Gray was lifted for Robert Stephenson.

Yu Darvish (3-1, 2.08 ERA) will pitch against Gray, just as he did during that Game 1 last Wednesday. In his outing that day, Darvish pitched four innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits. He struck out two and walked one. The Padres have won Darvish’s last four starts, but hopefully the Rockies are able to take some of the offensive momentum (as in, offense...not bullpen meltdown offensive) and hand Darvish his first loss since April 17.
