Colorado Rockies game no. 44 thread: Chi Chi González vs. Joe Musgrove

The Rockies will focus on avoiding a sweep in San Diego

After another frustrating loss on a wild pitch, the Colorado Rockies will have to reset and refocus if they want to avoid their fourth sweep of the season. It might even be tougher now that the Padres expect to have one or both of, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Eric Hosmer back in the lineup after being sidelined for about a week because of COVID-19 contact tracing. Either way, the Rockies, who are now 1-4 against San Diego, will be happy to see that they won’t be facing the Padres again until June 14th.

On the mound for Colorado will be the 29-year-old Chi Chi González (2-1, 4.79 ERA). González is coming off of his best start of the season when he threw seven shutout innings against the Reds on May 13th. It was his longest outing of the season in part because of his ten ground-ball outs. González has not faced the Padres since last season but they are a team he has historically struggled against with a 7.43 ERA in 13 13 career innings against the Friars. In fact, González may have had the worst start of his career in San Diego last year when he gave up four runs and three walks and got pulled before recording the second out of the game.

For San Diego, it’ll be 28-year-old right hander Joe Musgrove (3-4, 2.86 ERA). Musgrove is in the midst of a career year in San Diego, highlighted of course by the first ever Padres no-hitter that he threw back on April 9th. Since then Musgrove finished the month of April strong but has given up four or more runs in two of his three starts in May, all of them only for five innings. Musgrove has a balanced six pitch mix consisting of a slider, cutter, curveball, 4-seam fastball, changeup and sinker. Musgrove hasn’t faced the Rockies since 2019 but does hold a 2.77 ERA in 13 career innings against Colorado.
