Colorado Rockies game no. 28 thread: Chi Chi González vs Merrill Kelly

The Rockies look to split the series in Arizona before heading home.

Last night was fun, right? A 14-6 stomping of the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks for an elusive road win. Well, now the Rockies need to do it again. A win this afternoon in the desert is good for a series split, which would be the best series result the Rockies have had on the road so far in 2021. It would also be a great way to carry some much needed momentum back home to Coors Field tomorrow. Charlie Blackmon and CJ Cron get scheduled off days today. Matt Adams will make his first start for the Rockies at first base, while Alan Trejo gets his second big league start at second base.

Taking the mound for the Rockies is Chi Chi González, who is having a solid—if unremarkable—season so far as a placeholder number five starter with Kyle Freeland on the IL. He’s been good for at least five innings of work in each of his three starts so far and appears to have cut down on his walks. Chi Chi didn’t issue any free passes in his last start against the Giants, though he did allow seven hits. He carries an ERA of 3.60 and an ERA+ of 128 into today’s game, good for second best in the rotation behind Jon Gray.

On the bump for the Diamondbacks is the right handed Merrill Kelly. The Rockies last saw Kelly on April 8th, where they knocked him around for seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and only struck out three times. Kelly’s ERA is a bloated 6.33 through five starts, although he held the Padres to just one run through six innings in his last start before today.
