Colorado Rockies game no. 54 thread: Kyle Freeland vs Chase De Jong

The Rockies look to avoid the sweep and have something to write home about on the last game of the road trip

Things are... dire for the Colorado Rockies. With a record of 3-22 on the road, they’ve been shut out an MLB-record 10 times before June. Yesterday they lost the series with back-to-back shutout losses in a doubleheader, and today they look to avoid the sweep before retreating back to the safe and comfy confines of Coors Field.

Kyle Freeland will make his second start of the 2021 season for the Rockies in today’s early ballgame. Freeland had a short but relatively solid outing in his return to the club. He was definitely shaking off the big league rust, allowing four hits and walking three batters, but struck out five and allowed just one run in four innings of work.

On the bump for the Pirates is righty Chase De Dong, making his first start of the season. De Jong runs a four-pitch mix off the mound, with a four-seam fastball in the 93-95 mph range, and a series of downward action breaking pitches: a slider, a curveball and a changeup. De Jong has only started 10 games and played in 15 after making his MLB debut in 2017. He started two of his three games for the Astros in 2020 to the tune of a 14.73 ERA.
