Well... last night could have gone better. The Rockies lost their first game against Nolan Arenado and the St. Louis Cardinals in a 5-0 shutout that felt even less close than it looked. Tonight the Rockies will look to shake off the Coors hangover and rebound for their elusive third road win of the season after starting 2-12 away from LoDo.
Chi Chi González is making his fourth start for the Rockies, and potentially his last with the returns of Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela on the horizon. Chi Chi’s last start was less than stellar, struggling with location in 4 2⁄3 innings where he walked two and allowed four runs on five hits with a home run.
On the bump for the Redbirds is Carlos Martínez, with an ERA of 3.72 across six starts. Martínez is riding a hot streak, allowing just three total runs in his last three starts across 21 1⁄3 innings. In his last outing he threw for eight shutout innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Martínez utilizes a six-pitch mix with a lot of breaking pitches: a cutter, a four seam fastball, a slider, a sinker, a changeup and a curveball. He relies strongly on ground balls, and doesn’t issue walks often.
