Colorado Rockies game no. 69 thread: Blake Snell vs. Kyle Freeland

The Rockies will try to complete their fourth sweep of the season

After last night’s offensive surge, the Colorado Rockies now have the opportunity to sweep the San Diego Padres. The Friars have been swept three different times this season and are in the midst of a 4-10 slide in the month of June. Meanwhile, the Rockies have improved to 22-14 at Coors Field which is near the top of the National League in home records. What a tale of two teams it has been this season!

Today, the Rockies will face Cy Young winner Blake Snell (2-3, 4.97 ERA). Snell has yet to find his groove in San Diego as he’s given up 15 runs in his last four starts combined. Interestingly, Snell hasn’t been working deep into games; seven of his thirteen starts this year have gone for less than five innings. Nevertheless, everyone knows what Snell is capable of and just a couple starts ago (June 4th), he threw seven shutout innings. Perhaps he’s getting closer.

As for pitching at Coors, Snell did so for only the second time in his career earlier this season (May 12th). He only went four innings and allowed two runs but struck out seven batters that day. Snell saw the Rockies again just a week later in San Diego where he was much sharper as he threw six innings of one-run ball with 11 strikeouts.

For the Rockies, it will be Kyle Freeland (0-2, 9.00 ERA) taking the mound for just the fifth time this season. It’s been a bumpy start for Freeland as he’s given up 16 earned runs in his last three outings. His last start was historically bad as he gave up eight earned runs to the Reds and tied the franchise record of five home runs allowed.

Historically, Freeland has done well against the Padres with just a 3.58 career ERA against them.
