The Rockies lose another arm to injury in an already rough season

The Colorado Rockies announced this afternoon that righty reliever Mychal Givens has been sent to the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain. Per The Athletic’s Nick Groke, the pain has been bothering Givens a for a few days and the Rockies would like to give him time to recover.

Givens, acquired in 2020 via a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, is having a solid season where he may be showing himself off to potential trade suitors. In 24 games he has an ERA of 2.78 through 22 23 innings. Notably, his road ERA sits comfortably at 0.00 across seven innings and seven games, while his ERA at home is 4.02 over 17 games and 15 23 innings.

In a corresponding roster move, rookie sidearmer Justin Lawrence has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. Lawrence struggled in a short stint with the club earlier this season, posting an ERA of 8.44 over 5 13 innings with four walks and six strikeouts. However, he’s seen great success with the Isotopes in 9 13 innings. His ERA is just 1.93 with a WHIP of 0.96, complete with 10 strikeouts to five walks. Lawrence can reliably hit over 100 MPH on his four-seam fastball.

More injury updates

Jon Gray is expected to begin his rehab assignment with the Albuquerque Isotopes this weekend. He will start on Sunday against the Reno Aces with the hope of returning to the team next week on the road against Milwaukee. Gray left his June 4th start with a right flexor strain, and was placed on the 10-day IL on June 5th. The big righty will join utility man Chris Owings in Albuquerque, who began his rehab assignment earlier this week. Owings is 2-for-7 through two starts with the ‘Topes with a home run, a double and three RBIs. When Owings comes back, the Rockies face a dilemma of exactly where to put him. 1B Matt Adams, on the IL for the second time in his short stint with the Rockies, has resumed lower body baseball activities and hopes to resume throwing soon.
