Colorado Rockies game no. 74 thread: Kyle Freeland vs. Chris Flexen

Rockies begin 2-game Seattle swing tonight

I heard a song I hadn’t in a long time the other day and it just seems to tell the story of Kyle Freeland’s struggles in 2021. It’s some good old Frank Sinatra and the biggest line that stood out was …

Oops, there goes another problem.

Oops, there goes another problem.

Oops, there goes another problem.

Through five starts, he’s given up 22 earned runs (including nine home runs) for a 9.58 ERA over 20 2/3 innings and he’s yet to make it past five innings. His last start lasted only 3 2/3 innings when he gave up five runs on nine hits against the Padres. Ever start has been “another problem.”

But, as Sinatra sings, you gotta have “high hopes” and if there’s anyone that matches that persistent attitude it’s Freeland. Hopefully, that can happen tonight as the Rockies take on the Mariners in a two-game series in Seattle (the Mariners will come to Denver for two games later in July).

On the bright side, the Rockies have won five of their last seven games and are averaging over six runs per game. Even better, Raimel Tapia is riding a 17-game hitting streak. He’s hitting .442 with 14 doubles. The Rockies will also have the benefit of an extra bat in the lineup and Trevor Story will be filling that role at DH.

The Rockies will have to try to keep the hitting going on the road, where we all know they have struggled, against Chris Flexen, who’s 6-3 with a 4.12 ERA and coming off an eight-inning shutout performance against the Twins in his last start. The Mariners have won seven out of the last eight, including four walk-offs during the stretch.
