The Rangers will call upon Mike Foltynewicz this afternoon, riding high with a 1.29 ERA over his last 14 innings. It comes with a season figure of 4.31, however, and his strikeout percentage of 16.9 is well below the league average of 24.2. Denver’s thin air could soon pose a challenge for an arm that largely relies on contact; Foltynewicz’s last outing in Denver came on August 16, 2017 where he allowed eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. He holds a 9.82 ERA at Coors Field over 12 innings of work.
Foltynewicz has a rather distributed pitch selection; his most used pitch is a fastball at 36.7 percent use, and it is closely followed by a slider (26.0) and sinker (21.6).
Austin Gomber will make his 11th start of the year and his first at home since May 12. The lefty pitched the second game of the Pittsburgh doubleheader on Saturday and was held to four innings of work in a seven-inning contest. It came after throwing eight innings against the Mets; in his last two starts, Gomber has thrown a combined 12 innings and allowed four earned runs. His strikeout percentage in his last five starts has been steadily higher than his season average (24.9).
Gomber’s pitch mix could be reaching greater consistency at home and on the road, as was shown in consecutive starts with San Diego (home/road) in mid May. It will be interesting to see if he calls upon his curveball more this afternoon, as Texas has the eighth-highest strikeout percentage in baseball.
Colorado’s bullpen has allowed one run in the series so far (5 1/3 IP), and 80 pitches have been thrown by Rockies relievers over the past two games. Meanwhile, Texas’ bullpen has tossed 121 since the series opened, and allowed three earned runs in three innings on Wednesday.
Elias Díaz, Matt Adams and Brendan Rodgers will return to Colorado’s starting lineup; none of them appeared in Wednesday’s game. Ryan McMahon, C.J. Cron and Dom Nuñez will receive extra rest going into the weekend set with Oakland, but will be available today off the bench.
