After yesterday’s incredible one-hit performance from Germán Márquez, the Rockies now have a golden opportunity to complete the three game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates. This will be the final matchup of the year between the Pirates and the Rockies, Colorado holds the season head-to-head advantage at 3-2. This game also marks the exact midpoint of the season. At the conclusion of this game, we will be exactly half way through what might be the most lopsided home/away season an MLB team has ever had.
For the Pirates, it’ll be 28-year-old right-hander Chad Kuhl (2-4, 5.05 ERA) on the mound. Kuhl is making his tenth start of a season that got off to a 0-4 start with a 6.52 ERA up until his last two starts. In those last couple of outings, Kuhl has only allowed a combined two runs in 12 innings. This will only be Kuhl’s second career start at Coors Field, the last coming in a 2017 loss when he allowed four runs on nine hits in just six innings.
For the home team, Jon Gray (4-6, 3.97 ERA) will make his 14th start of the year. Gray has had some wild moments but has mostly been solid this season. Especially at Coors Field, where he holds a 3.25 ERA in eight starts. Gray is coming off of a five shutout inning performance against the Brewers that saw him strike out a season-high ten batters. Gray faced these same Pirates just a month ago but only went three innings and gave up three runs. In fact, through five career starts against the Pirates dating back to 2015, Gray has allowed 36 hits and 20 runs in just 22 2⁄3 innings (7.94 ERA).
He’ll look to get some run support from the Coors Rockies (who’re hitting .283) just as Márquez did.
