The Rockies battled all night long, but were ultimately unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to the A’s 9-5 on Friday.
Gray rough from the get-go
Jon Gray struggled with command early, and he was never really able to recover. Pitching just 2 1⁄3 innings, Gray was either way off the plate or right over it. He allowed five earned runs on four hits (two of which were solo homers) and two walks, with no strikeouts. Gray opened the game with a four-pitch walk to Mark Canha, which would act as a prelude to his tough day. Gray ended up leaving the game in the third inning due to what was later described as “general right elbow soreness.”
Rockies battle, but can’t quite complete the comeback
Gotta hand it to the Rockies - despite the deficit, they never said die. The Rockies scored in the third, fourth, and seventh innings, never quite allowing the game to become a blowout. Yonathan Daza (single, triple), Brendan Rodgers (two singles), and Raimel Tapia (two singles, double) all had multi-hit games. The coolest moment, though, was Alan Trejo’s seventh inning home run - the first of his burgeoning major league career. Save that baseball!

Canha-anball comin - it’s Murphy’s Law
The two driving forces behind Oakland’s attack were Mark Canha and Sean Murphy. Canha went 2-for-3 with a homer and two walks, plus two runs scored and drove in two. Murphy, meanwhile, went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. These two were the catalyst behind a potent offensive attack, though others (Matt Olson, Jed Lowrie) contributed as well. While the A’s had the same number of hits as the Rockies (12), they were able to take advantage where the home team could not.
Daza-ling dive
Do you love outfield dives? I sure do. Yonathan Daza contributed his own web gem in the sixth inning, robbing Tony Kemp of a sure-thing extra-base hit. The play further shows that Daza is making the absolute most of his opportunities in the majors - he’s now hitting a clean .331 on the season.
