Colorado Rockies game no. 59 thread: Cole Irvin vs Kyle Freeland

Two southpaws face off in game two of this three-game interleague series

After losing last night and snapping their winning streak at four, the Colorado Rockies will look to bounce back tonight against the Oakland Athletics.

In a battle of lefties, Cole Irvin (3-7, 4.12 ERA) gets the call for the A’s, coming off a rough stretch in which Oakland has lost in his last five starts. This is Irvin’s first year with Oakland after pitching for the Phillies in 2019 and 2020 primarily as a reliever.

Irvin has posted an ERA+ of 94 this year and is looking to establish himself as a major league starter. He will be doing so against a Rockies team that he beat in his only appearance against, gaining the victory in one of his three starts as a member of the Phillies in 2019.

Kyle Freeland (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will take the ball for the Rockies in his third start of the season. Freeland failed to go more than four innings in either of his first two starts and is still looking to find his footing after recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered in spring training.

Freeland will be facing an A’s team that he has faced one other time in his career, a game in which he got the win after allowing zero runs on five hits in his six innings of work. This will be Freeland’s 2021 home debut as his first two starts came on the road and he will look to capitalize on the energy of his home crowd as he looks for his first victory of the year.
