It seems like so long ago that the Colorado Rockies swept the Texas Rangers, but its only been two games. The Rockies have since fell back to Earth, dropping two in a row to the Oakland Athletics for the series loss. It’s not been all bad, though: Brendan Rodgers finally hit his first big league home run, and Jhoulys Chacín was one pitch away from an immaculate inning. As the weather gets hotter in Colorado, the Rockies will look to do the same with a win against the A’s today to avoid the series sweep.
Germán Márquez gets the nod today for the Rockies as the rotation flips over. Márquez has been excellent across his last three starts, giving up just two earned runs and walking just six with 21 strikeouts in 20 innings. Germán’s return to form has been a blessing for the beleaguered Rockies, and they need him at his best after back-to-back games with poor performances from the rotation.
On the bump for Oakland is James Kaprielian, a right-handed rookie having a great debut campaign. Kaprielian has an ERA of just 2.95 with a WHIP of 1.13 and 22 strikeouts in four starts. Kaprielian relies on a five pitch mix that includes a four seam fastball averaging around 93 MPH, a curveball, a slider, a changeup, and a sinker. He has a K% of 24.4 and an average against of .190 through 21 1⁄3 innings, but does have a tendency to give up fly-ball contact, which the Rockies could take advantage of.
