The Colorado Rockies came crashing back to Earth after a three game sweep of the Texas Rangers, dropping two in a row to the Oakland Athletics for a series loss. The Rockies needed a win before hitting the road after the weekend and they did just that. Germán Márquez and the Rockies pitching staff elevated the team to a 3-1 victory over the A’s.
That sweet Márquez magic
Starting pitcher Germán Márquez was absolutely excellent in today’s game. In six innings of work he allowed just one run on four hits with two doubles in the sixth. Germán’s command looked sharp, and he walked just one batter while striking out six. In his last four starts including today, he’s struck out 27 batters while walking just seven and allowing only three runs. Germán had some struggles early in the season, but it looks like the Rockies’ ace has returned to form.

Bull(de)pen(dable)
The Rockies saw three solid innings of bullpen work after Germán’s afternoon was finished. Mychal Givens toed the rubber in the 7th inning. Givens led off the inning with a strikeout, but then got himself into trouble with back-to-back hits, He prevented any runs from scoring with two very clutch strikeouts. His ERA is down to 3.10 on the year. Closer Daniel Bard worked a two inning save, his seventh of the season. In the top of the ninth he struck out two, and was throwing straight gas, with multiple pitches touching 101 MPH. Bard ended the game striking out Jed Lowrie on a fastball registering 101.3 MPH.

Going streaking
The Rockies scored only three runs on their nine hits, but it was good enough to pull off the win. Charlie Blackmon and Yonathan Daza are surging at the plate, and both of them have solid hit streaks going. As Charlie Blackmon regains “Chuck Nazty” form, he’s now hit in seven straight games. Daza, the breakout star of the 2021 season, has hit in eight straight.
