Colorado Rockies game no. 62 thread: Austin Gomber vs. Braxton Garrett

Rockies look to win their fifth road game of the season in Miami

After last night’s 13-hit barrage from the Marlins, the Rockies will try to even the series in South Beach tonight. As we all know, playing away from Coors Field has been a struggle for the Rockies all season with a historically bad 4-23 record on the road. However, this Marlins club has had their own share of struggles after losing ten of their last 13 games. Will the Rockies road woes continue or are the Marlins due to turn things around? We’ll find out tonight.

For the Rockies, it’ll be Austin Gomber (4-5, 4.12 ERA) making his 13th start of the season. Gomber is coming off of his first shutout of the year last week against the Rangers when he threw six scoreless frames for the win. After having his ERA jump to 6.35 exactly a month ago, Gomber now has a 1.53 ERA in his last five starts. At first glance, Gomber’s 5.44 ERA on the road is concerning, but when you look at his road starts it’s clear that his numbers are being hampered his April 26th whomping by the Giants when he gave up nine runs in less than two innings. If we ignore that start, Gomber would have a 3.28 ERA on the road.

Gomber has never pitched in LoanDepot Park and only ever faced the Marlins for just one inning of relief back in 2018 when he gave up two runs and two walks.

Making only his third major league start of his career is 23-year-old rookie Braxton Garrett (0-0, 9.00 ERA). Garrett was a first round, seventh overall pick out of high school by the Marlins back in 2016. According to, Garrett is the Marlins’ number seven prospect in their system. The left hander made his MLB debut last September and made two starts before beginning the 2021 season at Triple-A Jacksonville. He made one relief appearance this season on May 15th against the Dodgers in which he allowed three earned runs in three innings of work.

Garrett was just called up yesterday and is taking the place in rotation of Daniel Castano who suffered a shoulder injury. At Triple-A, Garrett has a 3.28 ERA through five starts this season.

Also, before today’s game it was announced Matt Adams was placed on the IL and Connor Joe was recalled. Trevor Story is expected to be activated tomorrow.
