The Hartford Yard Goats had a rough week, going 0-6 against the Portland Sea Dogs (BOS). But the other three teams posted winning records. The Isotopes have only lost two games thus far in July; the Indians have gone 6-4; and the Grizzlies have gone 8-2. The Goats, meanwhile, have only won three games thus far.
But Rockies outfield prospect Brenton Doyle (No. 12 PuRP) is having a fantastic July. Described by his former teammate Willie MacIver (HM PuRP) as “the most physically impressive player [he’s] ever played with,” the 6-foot-3, 220-pound outfielder is slashing .389/.421/.611 with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI, two walks, eight strikeouts, and four stolen bases in five attempts. After an up-and-down June, the 23-year-old is on a nine game hitting streak since July 1, and has had multiple hits four times.
Triple-A: Albuquerque Isotopes (4-1, 22-35 overall)
Speaking of good Julys, Antonio Santos (No. 21 PuRP) has also been having a pretty good month. In three appearances totaling three innings, Santos has allowed just one run on two hits. The 24-year-old right-hander also struck out five and walked two.
Outfielder Ryan Vilade (No. 3 PuRP) made his Futures Game appearance on Sunday. Vilade served as the starting designated hitter for the National League squad and he ended up going 0-for-2 at the plate. However, he went 4-for-9 with a double, an RBI, four walks, a strikeout, and two stolen bases (both in the same game on July 5 against the finale against the El Paso Chihuahuas [SD]).
Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats (0-6, 18-41 overall)
Not everyone is having good Julys so far. Recently promoted pitcher Karl Kauffmann (No. 11 PuRP) continued his struggles in Hartford this week, allowing six runs (five earned) over five innings in his recent start. He struck out three and walked two. Kauffmann has yet to allow under five runs in each of his last four starts, and in five of his last six.
Ryan Feltner (No. 25 PuRP) had an OK week, making two starts. In each of his two starts, he allowed three runs — on seven hits on July 6 and on two hits on July 11. Feltner walked five batters in his last start, though, and has only one walk less (6) than strikeouts (7) in his last two starts combined. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great and hopefully the five walks were just a fluke.
High-A: Spokane Indians (3-3, 28-32 overall)
While Brenton Doyle has had a great hitting performance in July thus far, Chris McMahon (No. 7 PuRP) is having a great pitching performance in July. In two starts this month, McMahon has pitched a total of 11 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on ten hits. He has also struck out 16 and walked just three. In fact, McMahon has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last four starts.
Low-A: Fresno Grizzlies (5-1, 39-21 overall)
Fellow 2020 draft pick Sam Weatherly (No. 17 PuRP) pitched lights out this week after getting roughed up a bit on July 4. Weatherly pitched six innings in his July 10 start against the San Jose Giants (SF), not allowing a single run on just two hits alongside seven strikeouts and one walk.
