The 2021 MLB Draft is in the books! The Rockies made 21 picks this year. They started with high school outfielder Benny Montgomery eighth overall out of Red Land High School in Pennsylvania. He would end up being their only high school pick. Their final pick was Tyler Ahearn, a right-handed pitcher from the Florida State University.
The Rockies has 21 picks in the 20-round draft, and drafted nearly equal numbers of pitchers (11) and position players (10). They also drafted just one high school player and 20 college players. They started off with their high schooler, then drafted three straight college arms before drafting University of Memphis catcher Hunter Goodman in the fourth round (109th overall). They then alternated between pitchers and position players in rounds 5-9 before drafting back-to-back position players in rounds 10 and 11. They then alternated pitchers and position players in rounds 12-14, and then finished with three position players followed by three right-handed pitchers.
Overall the Rockies drafted 11 pitchers (seven righties and four lefties), two catchers, two infielders (both shortstops), and six outfielders (including their only high schooler).
In 2020, teams were able to sign unlimited undrafted free agents for $20,000 apiece starting on June 14 — three days after the draft concluded. It appears that the rules are still in place for 2021, but the only news I could find on the matter was this ESPN article from Aug. 31, 2021.
As of July 31, 2021, all but one of the Rockies 2021 draft picks have signed their contracts as listed below. The only player to not sign is Elijah Trest, drafted in the 19th round. Trest has decided to return to school at the University of Arkansas.
