After last nights loss, the Rockies will now look to tie up the inter-divisional series against the Mariners. The big news coming into today’s game is all about the return of Rockies starter Austin Gomber. Gomber had been on the IL since June 20th as he dealt with left forearm tightness. Today he is back and he’ll now try to propel the Rockies to their second win since the All-Star break before heading out on the road.
On the mound today for Seattle will be the right hander Keynan Middleton (0-0, 3.75 ERA). Middleton is a reliever who’s being used as an opener. It’s his first career start but this will very much be a bullpen game for Seattle. From what I could find, he does not appear to be related to recently crowned NBA champion Khris Middleton.
On the other side, Austin Gomber (6-5, 3.68 ERA) will look to get back to pitching as well as he was just before his injury. In his four starts in June, Gomber allowed just three runs in 21 total innings for a 1.29 ERA with ZERO walks. His most impressive start, maybe of his career, was in June when he threw eight shutout innings against the Padres. Today though, the most important thing for him will be to keep feeling good and avoid any setback.
Gomber has been extremely good at home with a 1.48 ERA, .167 opponent average and a 0.89 WHIP, all of which lead the team.
Raimel Tapia also makes his return from an illness that has kept him out of the lineup since the All-Star break.
