Colorado Rockies game no. 99 thread: Jon Gray vs Josiah Gray

In a battle for Gray Supremacy, which Gray will rise to the top?

The Colorado Rockies actually have a chance to win a road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After an exciting 9-6 finish on Friday, the bats fell silent in last night’s 1-0 loss despite an excellent performance from Kyle Freeland. Now, on a true ‘Gray Day’, Jon and Josiah will square off to decide the series at Chavez Ravine.

Taking the mound for the Rockies is big Jon Gray, and unfortunately it must be said that this could be his final start in purple as the trade deadline looms. He’s strung together five quality starts and lowered his season ERA to 3.68, just a tick above his career best (3.67, 2017). His road ERA is down to 4.54, which is second best in the rotation behind Germán Márquez. If today is the final Gray Day for the Colorado Rockies, let’s hope the fans will get to see him at his best.

On the bump for the Dodgers is Josiah Gray, a 23-year-old righty and the organization’s No. 2 overall prospect (No. 42 MLB). Gray is making his second career appearance and his first big league start. His primary pitch is a tricky four-seam fastball with rising action that tops out at around 97 mph. His arsenal of breaking pitches features a mid-to-high-80s power slider, an upper-70s curveball, and he will also show a developing changeup. In his Major League debut, Gray pitched four innings of relief for the Dodgers, striking out seven batters and walking only one. He did get roughed up, however, giving up four hits and four earned runs, including three homers.
