In the first game of this nine-game swing in California, the Rockies offense exploded for nine runs. In the three games since, they’ve combined for four runs and the bats will need to come back to life if the Rockies want to get any more wins on this road trip.
On the bright side, Austin Gomber (7-5, 3.74 ERA) will be back on the mound for the Rockies. After missing a month with left forearm tightness, Gomber returned to the rotation on July 20 and gave up three runs on three hits (all three homers) in six innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. Also helping the 6-3 victory was a scoreless effort for the bullpen and a five-run first inning that included a three-run double by Dom Nuñez.
Lefty José Suarez (4-3, 2.85 ERA) will get the start for the Angels. Suarez has bounced between the bullpen and rotation since 2019, including joining the Angles rotation in early July after posting a 1.98 ERA in 18 1/3 innings in relief to start the year. In three starts, Suarez has posted a 4.61 ERA over 13 2/3 innings with two homers, seven walks, 11 strikeouts, and a 1.17 WHIP while holding opponents to a .191 batting average.
Earlier in the day on Thursday, the Rockies released first baseman Matt Adams and recalled infielder Rio Ruiz, who the Rockies picked up on waivers in May, from the Isotopes to fill his roster spot.
